Mercedes is recalling the GLE and GLS because a faulty ground circuit in the lighted star emblem might disable things like power steering

Many outlets are reporting a certain schadenfreude-inducing recall of 2020 Mercedes SUVs, not including the older GLS pictured above, but hey this was the best picture of a GLS or GLE with a lighted star I could find. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ...

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 580, GLS 450, GLS 580 vehicles equipped with an optional illuminated Mercedes-Benz star logo in the front grill. The star logo’s electrical ground connection may not be installed properly, potentially affecting the function of other components that share the same ground connection, such as the power steering control unit, wiper motor, and/or the left headlight.

Oh, and the recall notice starts with this little piece of “no shit, really?”:

If the power steering, wiper motor, or left headlight malfunction, there could be an increased risk of a crash.

Go ahead everyone, enjoy your little bit of schadenfreude.

UPDATE: Multiple of you have pointed out the lighted star is not compatible with Mercedes’ Distronic active cruise control. I played around with the GLS configurator to figure this out. Y’all are right.

Kinja'd!!!

So basically the silly lighted star is only available if you forego active cruise, which came standard on my $26k Civic Si, but is part of a $1,950 option package on the $76k GLS 450. Uh huh. Mmm’K.

I didn’t even know that newer high-end models came with the lighted star - I recall that when originally introduced, you could only get Distronic OR the lighted star, and I thought all GLS models would have Distronic by 2020.

IIRC getting the lit star also means you cant get radar cruise control.  Want to show off so you get a worse car thats also more dangerous, perfect.

Who needs power steering when you have all that star power?

Distronic is still an option.

Sadly, in most cases I see, this dumb option is requested by those who order for the dealer, and is “on the lot”, so to speak.

If I was buying a car, removal would be a condition of sale.

And yeah, it’s a German car, everything is optional.

I think Scotty Kilmer’s head exploded upon learning this.

Always thought the light up logo stuff was such a weird move from premium brands. Apparently people LOVE tacky things!

It’s a toss up for me, l ight up badges vs. logo puddle lights... EW

But how do you feel about functional logo puddle lights?

I know many things are optional on many premium cars. But at this point when many mainstream cars are making more and more active safety features standard (and active cruise usually comes along for the ride) , these specific features still being optional on the lux brands is a bit inexcusable.

I kinda like the hands free hatch opener kick spot indicator one, but the gauge cluster one is stupid.

All about the profit margins, and a buying public who will pay for it. I think adaptive cruise is still optional on most models, in theory you can have a 150K (MSRP anyway, but nobody pays that) car lacking it. There’s an upcharge for leather and most paint colors at model s below the S, too .

I have a feeling a minimum suite of safety nannies could eventually be mandated by a blue NHTSA . Kinda like what happened with backup cameras.

Yeah I agree that the tailgate one is cool

In some ways, that might not be all bad, but if it costs the automakers $1K per car, they’ll raise prices by $3500 and blame “over-regulation” or other talking points .

But think of the advertising opportunities for the mainstream brands who made the stuff standard before a mandate!

“We didn’t need a government mandate to make these safety nannies standard across our lineup. Because your safety is too important to be optional. ”

I wouldn’t be surprised to see that angle - they definitely mention the nannies/assists already (as it is a pretty good feature set for the money).   Of course, they’ll gloss over the price increase that’s probably at least double the cost.

The Germans, MB in particular, use the pioneering angle, instead. MB had radar cruise optional 20 years ago, mass production of airbags and ABS 40 years ago, etc. Optional, but they existed.

Over and over we claim that all this increased complexity is just more stuff to fail.
